요 약

Besides intelligent design and improved motor performance, the use of light materials is an effective way to improve fuel efficiency by the reduction of vehicle weights. Among commercially available structural materials, Mg alloys show great potential for implementation in relevant applications as a result of their intrinsic characteristics such as low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability and recyclability. A further increase in their use is expected, particularly in automotive applications. Nevertheless, wider use of this lightest structural metallic material has been hindered by cost considerations. For example, the limited formability of classical wrought alloys requires that processing should be conducted at elevated temperature, a factor which again affects the efficiency of manufacturing products. Furthermore, only a limited spectrum of microstructures and mechanical properties can nowadays be achieved.

Recent developments in processes and alloys have opened up new opportunities for processing Mg products. In this overview the current research activities at the MagIC of the Helmholtz Zentrum Geesthacht (Germany) will be introduced, with emphasizing the recent developments in alloy design and processing technologies for semi-finished magnesium products.
